Since it’s only been 13 days post-marathon and I’m technically still in recovery-mode, I figured I’d say hello! If you’re gonna follow me, then here are some things you should know, before you decide whether or not to jump ship😜.
1️⃣I’m a Christian. As in, I’m a totally flawed, self-centered person, but for whatever reason, God chose to cover all those flaws with the blood of His Son, Jesus, and give me His Son’s worth and inheritance. ANYTHING GOOD you see in me is bc of Christ. I didn’t/don’t earn God’s acceptance, but I have it FREELY, every moment, everyday, and therefore, I am *never,* EVER in a place to judge ANYONE. My purpose is to honor God by loving others, as generously as possible, bc that’s how God loves me.
2️⃣I’m first-gen Asian American, meaning, my parents are smart, hard-working immigrants from Taiwan, who came here for grad school and built a life. They worked all the time, so I grew up a latch-key kid in a middle-class neighborhood in Houston, TX. I took care of my grandma who had Alzheimers and my little sister, and The Winslows & The Tanners were my family role models.
3️⃣I didn’t start running until college, while desperately trying to control an eating disorder. I ran my first marathon in 2004, clueless, with my longest training run being 13 mi, and, I subsequently sustained stress fractures in my shins! I’ve run 5 marathons since, but didn’t officially start #CarolynDreamsofBoston until the end of 2016…then I got injured and spent 2017 in rehab! I’ll get that 🦄 one day, tho!
4️⃣There was a period of time (years) when finances were tight, and we were on food stamps + WIC. I had to make everything from scratch in order to make the dollar stretch, and this is the main reason I know how to cook! It also made me realize how incredibly difficult it is for low-income families to eat healthy. .
5️⃣In 15 yrs, I got married, had two kids, and moved from TX➡️ CA➡️TX ➡️MA. My husband had depression x8+yrs, and I’ve been lonely and depressed myself but found life through regular counseling. My default is to think I’m never good enough, but I’ve been learning how to embrace who I am, and, as a result, how to empower others too!❤️🙌🏼
Good morning happy Saturday friends! Felt so good to sleep in until 6:30 and still squeeze in 6 miles 🙌🏽🏃🏽♀️ and to top it off the weather was absolutely perfect 39 degrees cold and sunny but didn’t feel bad at all ❄️☀️then at the end of my run captured the sunrise 🌅 Time to enjoy my juniper latte ☕️ and see what the plans are. Have an amazing day ✌🏽❤️
➡️Was möchtest du als Blogger erreichen?
▶️ Beim @nycmarathon ähnlich gute Zahlen: 50.773 Finisher, darunter 21.091 Frauen.
Pondering the most pressing issue of the day now that my Saturday miles are banked...which mini donut flavors to get in a dozen 🤔🍩😂
Just let my mind run free and unspool the tangles in my brain this morning running around my neighborhood. I was still thinking about the keys of our daily routines, which led me to think of how powerful repetition and muscle memory is. It's the reason I could honestly jump into my old ballet studio's snow scene or waltz of the flowers (lol!) from the Nutcracker, though it wouldn't be pretty due to my extreme lack of hamstring flexibility these days 🤣 But I remember the steps, even the place on the stage I'd be in (seriously, there was maybe one year where there were a couple girls shorter than me but usually I was always on the same side of the stage, etc. due to height). While I was really never meant to be a ballet dancer, there are so many lessons that have carried over into my adult life. Pushing yourself to that uncomfortable place, but maintaining a sense of calm & grace so that you can mentally keep going. The difference now is that I can mash up my face however I want when things get tough, whereas that was slightly discouraged in ballet 😂
Whoa, anyways - 8 easy paced miles this morning & some mobility 🏃🏽♀️
MOTIVATION SATURDAY 💪🏽
I haven’t run in a while & I’ll tell you this felt damn good 🏃🏽♀️ 3 miles in a NH heat wave 🔥 while my main focus is on lifting and becoming stronger, I want to ensure the cardio isn’t forgotten, so a couple of times per week either running, biking or swimming is perfect (also cause I’m thinking a sprint tri is next!)
Resurrection of the ‘gram 📸 here for a friendly PSA that it’s ok to not be in constant training mode, and that’s been me for a couple months. Sometimes it’s fun to have seasons where your priorities are different. .
I turned 28 two weeks ago and was reflecting on where I’m at now, which I’m perfectly happy with, but it’s funny how non-linear your “running career” progress and even LIFE can be. It makes it interesting though and I know (hope) stellar running performances are in my future, but right now I’m not sure how soon they may be! I did get in 4 miles on an amazing springlike morning in my favorite place 🏃🏼♀️🏃🏼♀️

Yes, you're seeing that right, I FINALLY ran!😂 I've been "hibernating" these past few weeks, focusing on my mental health and taking time off. I finally got that urge to run again--which is good since #charlestonmarathon is a month away🤦♀️ But, 14 miles in the bank, 12 with my boo and 2 solo👌
Now for more Christmas fun over my staycation! Happy Saturday!!!
If you’ve been following me this past year, you know that for the most part I try to keep my training pretty conservative. I struggled with injuries for a long time after Boston this year and I have learned to trust the process. I’ve seen time and time again how consistently grinding out the easy mileage can add up to surprisingly fast PRs! Well it’s a cutback week on my plan and guys, the legs were just feeling too fresh for 9 easy miles. 😂 I needed to have a little fun. I looked ahead on my schedule and I only have one quality session (+ an easy paced long run) next week, so I decided to let my body take the lead today. We ended up with 9 moderate miles and a fast finish shiny new mile PR. I took 2 Clif blocks 45 mins in and brought no water on this run, so I was pretty depleted by the end. Even though I didn’t stay “on-plan” a lot can be said for the mental gains made on a run like this. 😂 Gotta keep the spark alive in the running relationship. 🥰✨

Real Talk: I swim almost every Saturday. And you know what? Swimming scares the 💩 out of me. I took lessons as a kid, and I can “survive” in the pool, but actually swimming for exercise is HARD. Not beating able to breathe freaks me out. 🔹
But. I do it every Saturday. I go to the pool and practice overcoming fears.
It has taken me a long time to realize that overcoming scary things takes practice. Just like anything else in life. If we don’t practice getting over what we’re scared of when it’s something g small—like swimming for goodness sakes—then how do we expect to do it when it counts? 🔹
This practice is what makes us relentless. And I want to be relentless. Relentlessly fearless. 🔹

HILLS + HARASSMENT.
After almost 11 hours sleep and a much needed lazy couple of hours, I was full of energy for my run. Threshold + hills 🔥 What a combo!
That was until 12 mins into my warm up three boys decided they thought it would be OK to cycle towards me, push me and two of them grab my bum. NOT OK 😭 THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE TO HARASS ANYONE ON A RUN. Verbally or physically.
I was determined to finish my session as I had set out to do though 💪🏻 I just did it with a lot more anger than was intended for those hills. 6 minutes threshold on flat. 2 minutes rest. 10 x 50s hills 🤢 2 minutes rest. 6 minutes threshold on flat. Last threshold split was the fastest... clearly just wanted to get home! 6.5 miles for 🎄 @runup2christmas, and not for the little idiots.
I’ve reported it all as it is really not OK for anyone to have to put up with it 🙅🏻♀️ There were other people around, it was 11am, it was busy enough... they just didn’t care! I’ve read so many articles and posts of this happening to others. When will it stop?
Needless to say I didn’t take my phone out and get any photos today so it’s a 📸 from Valencia, where I felt 100% better than I did today.
19 miles at 8:45 pace - I just did that!!! 19 miles is such an incredible distance - you’re literally running for almost 3 hours straight. I’m humbled, but also so completely empowered after that run. Now off to Santa pictures and soccer games - ‘tis the season for ho-ho-ho and go-go-go!!
First run in a week, feels good to get these legs running instead of my nose 👃🏼👍🏼.
Generally, I tend to come back too soon after getting sick...and most of the time I pay for it. This was a nice week off (besides the whole feeling like death thing), there was zero guilt about missing runs like there has been for quite awhile due to being on a training plan for what feels like 2 years straight. I’m guilty of feeling like it’s the end of the world when I miss a run, like everything is ruined and all of the hardwork has been flushed down the drain. Towards the end of last week, I actually missed running because I just love doing it & not because I was panicking about missing the miles. Sometimes not being on a plan rocks.

5 Saturday miles ✔️
I had planned on running 3-4 miles this morning, but this pace felt great 😆😆😆 I literally had to make myself stop running! Now time to finish my Christmas shopping 🎅🏻🎁🎄. Happy Saturday 🤗

All the excitement today with the @OMMovement run club 🤗 Really, I was just a tad bit delirious from waking up at 3:45am. These movers keep me moving and make running 3 miles and doing yoga on a Saturday morning the most fun thing I could think of doing ❤️ awesome capture by @runnindaze#OMMovement#consciousnessinmotion#elevate
Need to be inspired? Then I recommend attending a Girls on the Run/ STRIDE race! These kids have trained for the last 8-10 weeks (part was interrupted by the hurricane) for this day. They are also required to have a “buddy,” so this program also helps get adults running! People of all ages were out in the down pour, running through puddles, and still had the best time! We had awesome volunteers, and even Santa made an appearance! Children are amazing, and to see the pure joy on their face crossing the finish line is magical. It may have rained this morning, but there was definitely enough light radiating off these kids to make up for it ☀️
