  • When you step in and the water's actually warm. This is the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park in Japan. Here, a wild troop of Japanese macaques love to bathe in the hot springs. This is the only group of monkeys known to do so, and was first brought to the world's attention in 1970 when LIFE magazine featured these monkeys on their January 30th cover. The park was founded in thanks to Sogo Hara, a railway employee who loved to hike. He was hiking one day in 1957 through the Jigokudani area, or the "Valley of Hell," so named because of the steep mountains and the sulphuric smell of the natural hot springs. On his hike, he noticed wild monkeys and began to take an interest in them. This area of Japan is cold is an ideal setting for ski resorts. However, the developments required deforestation, ski lift construction, and more human disturbance that pushed the Japanese macaques out of their natural habitat. Hara saw that the monkey population was rapidly declining in size as they moved to lower mountain regions like Jigokudani and even closer to human settlements like Yamanouchi. The closer these monkeys were to human villages, the more the monkeys raided crops from farms, which led to farmers to hunt down the monkeys. The monkeys also watched villagers soaking in the hot springs at a guest house named Korakukan, and began to copy this behavior. Someone took a picture of the monkeys bathing and the monkeys immediately became popular. Using this attention, Hara started a movement to protect the monkeys. New hot baths were made using a local hot spring source within the new monkey park. People came to see the famous snow monkeys, and offered food to prevent them from approaching the villages. Rangers feed them raw barley and soybean, with apples as a rare treat, but only as an incentive to prevent them from becoming dependent. You can still visit the park, but follow all rules such as not feeding the monkeys. #RulesForExploring Featured | © Ben Torode Location | Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, Yamanouchi, Nagano, Japan #WWTTY | Where Will TOTEM Take You? ____________________ #TOTEMMade #Monkey #Jigokudani #Japan

  • So the salt flats were under water, and the sunrise was a foggy haze...and we drove 2 hours last Sunday morning to find that out. BUT the photos turned out so much better than I could have hoped for - and a little more original if I do say so myself. Moral of the story - EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED, roll with the punches, and create lemonade out of whatever fruit that gets chucked in your face every 👏 damn 👏 day👏. - That’s the 2019 goal - let’s see if we can make it happen. What are your 2019 goals? 👇
